University of Louisville Hospital’s Center for Women and Infants Opens New Lactation Center
The Center for Women and Infants at the University of Louisville is happy to announce a new arrival… the Lactation Center.
Lactation Center Open House
Thursday, October 20
1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
This breastfeeding center, located on the third floor of the hospital, will support mothers and babies to have a successful breastfeeding experience.
Staffed by three experienced board-certified lactation consultants, the Lactation Center will help to fill a large gap in the community by providing education and one-on-one consultation. It is available to inpatients at University Hospital as well as any breastfeeding mothers in the community who need assistance.
The Center was partially funded through the assistance of The Louisville Metro Department of Health and Wellness. The Center is open Monday through Saturday by appointment. For more information, call (502) 562-6081.
University of Louisville Hospital has been a leader in the community in breastfeeding with the promotion of their Kangaroo Care Initiative. The program emphasizes skin-to-skin contact with parent and child from the moment of birth. It has been shown to increase breastfeeding rates, thus giving valuable health benefits to both mother and baby. Breastfeeding rates at UofL Hospital have increased from 45% to 74% since Kangaroo Care was first implemented in 2007.
The Center for Women and Infants at University Hospital has developed a training toolkit for the program and will be conducting “train-the-trainer” Kangaroo Care workshops for 43 Kentucky birthing hospitals from October 18 through November 29.
