Summer Research Internship Program 2012 at the James Graham Brown Cancer Center

The James Graham Brown Cancer Center at the University of Louisville hosts a Summer Research Internship Program that is open to high school sophomores, juniors and seniors in Louisville and the Jefferson Metro as well as college undergraduate students (who have a home-base in Louisville or within easy driving distance).  This year the program will accept up to 12 high school students and 3 college undergraduates for an 8-week research internship (Monday, June 11 through Friday, August 3).

The goal of the program is to afford students an opportunity to obtain hands-on research experience through working with James Graham Brown Cancer Center (JGBCC) research faculty in their laboratories.  Interns will be expected to commit a minimum of 20 hours per week for the entire 8-week period to the program.

In addition, a seminar series – organized specifically for this program – will be held at noon each Tuesday.  Speakers from the research faculty at UofL will discuss their current cutting-edge research projects or, in some cases, the hottest topics in cancer research today.  Interns also are welcome to attend the regular departmental and JGBCC seminar series.

Near the end of the 8-week period, interns prepare posters of their research for presentation at a special poster session organized during the last week of the program, as well as at the Annual James Graham Brown Cancer Center Retreat [Friday, October 26] and at Research!Louisville [Tuesday, September 17], an annual celebration of research at the University of Louisville.  Many previous interns have gone on to local, state and national science fairs (and won), a number have presented their work at national scientific meetings, and some are co-authors on scientific publications resulting from their work.

This year the program is funded by the James Graham Brown Cancer Center, which will provide a modest stipend for the interns.

If you are interested in science and would like to participate in this program, please complete an application – which for high school students consists of:  (1) application form and essay (HSSRIPap), (2) consent form (HSSRIPconsent), and (3) letter of recommendation from your primary science teacher; and for college undergraduates consists of:  (1) application form and essay (SRIPap), (2) consent form (SRIPconsent), and (3) letter of recommendation from your primary science professor – and send it to arrive by Monday April 9 to Diane Konzen, Summer Research Program Director, James Graham Brown Cancer Center, 529 South Jackson Street, Louisville, KY 40202.

Please direct any questions you may have to Diane Konzen at dkkonz01@louisville.edu.

Decisions will be announced ca. May 1.
