Saving Lives Across the Commonwealth

The Stroke Center in Louisville is a benefit to patients across Kentucky.

Stroke TherapyThe physicians at the University of Louisville Hospital Stroke Center take their role as academic medical center professors very seriously. The team has developed a five-pronged approach to statewide stroke education, treatment and prevention. The program calls for:

  • Physician outreach and education – Continuing medical education (CME) programming is offered at rural hospitals across the state to make sure that the quality of stroke diagnosis and early response does not depend on the size of the hospital or the community.
  • Community outreach and education – Stroke Center physicians and staff give scores of presentations at worksites and other professional, civic, social and religious groups each year. People who are able to recognize the warning signs of stroke in themselves or others are more likely to act quickly, saving lives.
  • Prevention – Working with various health organizations, the Stroke Center works diligently to educate health professionals and community members on the controllable risk factors for stroke, and offers guidance in lessening individual risk.
  • Nursing Education – The stroke team offers specialized training on signs, symptoms and innovative treatments for stroke to decrease complications three times each year to the entire University Hospital nursing staff. All University Hospital Neuro, ICU, progressive care and emergency department nurses are certified in the NIH stroke scale evaluation tool as a result of their Stroke Team training. The team also performs several nursing outreach education seminars across the state each year through the Kentucky Department of Health.
  • EMS Education – Through its statewide EMS education program, the U of L Health Care stroke team is improving systems of care for stroke for all Kentuckians. The EMS education program is designed to identify department needs, set goals, and enhance the delivery of first rate stroke response.
