As the clinical affiliate of the University of Louisville Health Sciences Center, clinical research is a crucial part of University Hospital’s mission.

Clinical trials are organized tests of new medicines and new treatment options. They are specific treatment plans designed to advance our knowledge of how to treat diseases or traumatic injury.

Your physician can answer most of your questions about qualifying for or participating in clinical trials. Participation in a clinical trial is never required.

Clinical trials are organized tests of new medicines and new treatment options designed to advance our knowledge of how to treat cancer or other diseases.

Patient volunteers who qualify try the new medicine or treatment. Treatments in clinical trials generally fall into two categories:

  • new medicines that have not been approved by the FDA for sale in the United States
  • medicines that are currently available for sale, but are being tested for a new disease or new doses

Participation in a clinical trial is always voluntary, and never required. Talk to your physician if you have questions about available clinical trials.
