PGY2 Informatics Specialty Residency

University of Louisville Health Care is the umbrella organization for University Hospital  (ULH), and the James Graham Brown Cancer Center. The facility collaborates with University Physician Associates (Louisville’s largest multi-specialty physician practice), University Outpatient Center, and the UofL Health Sciences Center. 

At University Hospital a world of medical knowledge is brought to each patient's bedside. As the primary adult teaching hospital for the University of Louisville's Health Sciences Center, the next generation of health care professionals is trained here. With 404 licensed beds, the acute-care tertiary hospital provides a full range of diagnostic, therapeutic, emergency and surgical services, including the region's only Adult Trauma Center. The Stroke Center was the first certified stroke center in Kentucky and utilizes innovative protocols and technology to improve patient care.

The Pharmacy Department provides comprehensive services to achieve optimal drug therapy outcomes for all patients, families and providers served by the institution.  Pharmacists provide decentralized clinical pharmacy services in all critical care and general medicine areas including oncology / bone marrow transplant, burn, surgical, medicine, cardiovascular, neurotrauma and neonatal intensive care units.  The Pharmacy Department takes an active role in organization and administration of clinical drug research.

The James Graham Brown Cancer Center provides the highest level of clinical care, access to the latest cancer research, resources, education and services for prevention and treatment of cancer.  The Brown Cancer Center has been recently remodeled and expanded to include a newly designed Pharmacy.
UofL Health Care is proud to serve outpatients in a new, state-of-the-art, multi-specialty health care facility, featuring twelve specialty medical practices in its Outpatient Center.

University of Louisville Health Care / PGY2 Pharmacy Informatics Residency Summary
The Department of Pharmacy at the University of Louisville Hospital is excited to offer this challenging educational opportunity of a one-year PGY2 residency in Pharmacy Informatics.  The residency is focused on patient care activities designed to develop informatics expertise and clinical competence.  Informatics Residency experiences include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Elective Experiences
  • Exchange Rotation
  • Infrastructure
  • Interfaces
  • Project Management
  • Research/Study Support

The resident may participate in patient education, drug information, Pharmacy & Therapeutics functions, quality improvement programs, fiscal planning and program development.  Experience in clinical trials, research, oversight of pharmacy students, participation in staff conferences, policy development, project management and participation in multidisciplinary committees is provided.

Orientation: Resident orientation activities include orientation to the hospital, Pharmacy Department, drug distribution systems, computer systems, technology, and clinical pharmacy services.

Staffing: Staffing responsibilities are carried out in the central pharmacy, followed by rotation through various other service throughout our Pharmacy system.

Travel / Interviews: Residents are eligible to attend one national meeting (either pharmacy or informatics related), as well as Great Lakes Pharmacy Residency Conference, Jefferson County Academy of Pharmacy, Kentucky Society of Health System Pharmacy, and Kentucky Bluegrass Health Information and Management Systems meetings.  Interview leave is granted at the discretion of the residency director.

Vacation / Holidays: Residents receive a total of 10 days of vacation and are required to work at least 2 major holidays per year.
