Curriculum Components
Dynamic Action-Reflection Model of Learning
Interns and residents have the opportunity for professional development through an educational process that dynamically engages clinical experience, self-awareness, reflection, instruction and integration.
Progressive Curriculum
Over the course of three training units, residents learn about systems theory, inter-cultural competency, group dynamics, leadership skills, spiritual assessment and caregiving skills related to various patient populations, as well as bio-medical and professional ethics. The curriculum moves progressively from Level 1 objectives to Level 2 objectives in order to meet part of the educational requirements for board certification as a professional chaplain.
Clinical Assignments
Interns and chaplain residents are assigned to clinical areas and provide spiritual care as members of an interdisciplinary team. Trauma coverage and spiritual care in the Emergency Department are significant aspects of residents’ clinical responsibilities.
Individualized Clinical Supervision
Two certified and experienced ACPE supervisors provide clinical supervision that takes into account students’ individual development, cultural background, and learning styles and needs.
Interdisciplinary Consultation
Interns and chaplain residents interact and consult with other healthcare practitioners both formally and informally. Grand Rounds as well as various other educational conferences are open for CPE students and residents to attend. During the third part of the residency, chaplain residents consult in weekly seminars and case conferences with physicians, psychologists, social workers and nurses.
Online Education
In cooperation with the Wayne E. Oates Institute, the residency curriculum offers a six-week online seminar about integrative medicine. This seminar connects residents in an online discussion group with a collaborative learning community of clergy and healthcare practitioners in other states and from around the world.
Clinical Research
Each unit, CPE interns and residents have the opportunity to choose and present a research project related to their educational interest and their clinical experience.
Educational Consultation
In cooperation with other CPE centers in Louisville, UofL Health Care offers CPE interns and residents the opportunity to consult with ACPE supervisors and other spiritual care clinicians about their educational process and professional development.
