U of L Health Care Geriatrics Center at Central Station
People often associate age with disease. Yet, aging does not cause diseases. While many seniors believe that the reason they are not feeling well is because they are getting older, this is not always the case. The problems they are experiencing may be related to an illness or injury not caused by age at all. This is why it is important to seek the helpful knowledge of an experienced geriatrician.
The physician/professors of the U of L Health Care Geriatrics Center conduct and review the nation’s leading research on quality geriatric care. They have developed an approach to care that meets the unique needs of geriatric patients and their families.
Helping the Whole Family
Illness affects the entire family. Our geriatric team takes the time to help patients’ caregivers understand the patient’s illness and develop strategies to help them cope and care for the patient.
Reaching the Patient
In addition to their roles as physician/researchers at the U of L Health Care Geriatric Center, many of our geriatricians serve as medical directors at local nursing homes in the Louisville area. Having attained the expertise that comes from a unique combination of education, training, research and experience, our geriatricians understand the need to see their patients outside the clinic when necessary. They see patients not only in the hospital, but also at the patient’s home if, the patient is homebound.
Specialized Care
The U of L Health Care Geriatrics Center provides specialized care to people 65 and older.
The Center features a team approach to care, bringing together:
- geriatricians
- gerontologists
- geriatric psychiatrists
- nurse practitioners
- social workers
Geriatricians are physicians who have postgraduate training in either Internal Medicine or Family Medicine with additional training in the medical, social, and psychological issues that concern older adults. They are specially trained to address issues such as memory loss, arthritis, osteoporosis, mobility and Alzheimer’s disease.
